Airbnb’s Brian Chesky Unveils Plans for New AI Lab

Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb, is set to advance from his role as an AI advocate to establishing his own AI laboratory. This initiative, initially reported by Bloomberg and later confirmed to TechCrunch by a reliable source, places Chesky among Silicon Valley leaders dissatisfied with the current offerings of major AI research labs.

Although Airbnb has used AI coding tools, Chesky noted last year that they have not sought collaboration with LLMs, as existing solutions did not meet his expectations.

Chesky comes with valuable expertise; he first connected with Sam Altman in 2006 through Y Combinator, which was instrumental in the foundation of Airbnb, and has maintained this relationship over the years. As OpenAI gained momentum, Chesky began holding regular meetings with Altman to share experiences related to managing a fast-growing tech company.

Having been considered for a position on OpenAI’s board, Chesky significantly aided Altman’s return to leadership following his dismissal by the board due to transparency issues. He provided public relations counsel and secured support for Altman among key figures in Silicon Valley.

However, it appears that Chesky is now positioning himself as a competitor to his protégé’s organization.

While the precise goals of Chesky’s upcoming AI lab remain unclear, the Bloomberg article indicates a potential emphasis on user experience and design—domains he has consistently prioritized at Airbnb.

This endeavor is akin to what Brett Adcock is working on at Hark, the AI lab he established last year aimed at creating an innovative user interface for an AI assistant, with a strong focus on hardware as well.

Chesky will not enter “founder mode” for this new venture; sources reveal he will continue in his capacity as Airbnb’s CEO and will not directly manage the lab. The newly appointed head will face challenges from competing AI labs and from a founding chair (presumably Chesky) known for an engaged management approach.
