Man Utd Executive Reveals Summer Transfer Strategy: Significant Investments Ahead Following Ederson Acquisition

MANCHESTER UNITED CEO Omar Berrada is steadfast in resisting pressures from market dynamics and agents while pursuing Premier League players.

The Moroccan executive affirmed that United intends to maintain the transfer strategy from the previous season, combining experience with youth.

Last summer, United spent over £200 million on players like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens — yielding substantial returns.

This summer, United aims to finalize at least five new signings, with Atalanta midfielder Ederson anticipated to be the club’s first acquisition following a £38 million agreement earlier this week.

Regarding United’s strategy for the transfer window this summer, Berrada expressed optimism about its clarity.

Berrada, 48, stated to Inside Man Utd: “The strategy from last summer will be repeated. We have a definitive plan.

“I believe the model we implemented last season is a strong approach, focusing on a blend of veterans and emerging talents,” he stated.

“Our aim is to acquire players who have demonstrated their capabilities in the Premier League , while also scouting talented players excelling in other leagues.”

Addressing the issue of agents exploiting United’s past overspending, Berrada emphasized: “We need to maintain strict discipline; it’s really that straightforward.

“It’s crucial that we don’t allow the market or agents to dictate our choices.”

“We have a clear understanding of our budget and must adhere to it. However, we also need to be adaptable and responsive. Our strategy is well-defined.”

With Casemiro departing Old Trafford, questions have arisen about Uruguay‘s Manuel Ugarte — a £50 million signing from PSG in 2024 — brought attention by Michael Carrick, who did not utilize him after he started in the home defeat to Leeds in April.

Apart from Ederson, United is also targeting West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, valued at £80 million, along with Carlos Baleba from Brighton.

City seems to be ahead in the race to sign Elliot Anderson, even though their initial offer was rejected by Forest.

Berrada moved to United from Manchester City in 2024 after spending 13 years as Chief Football Operations Officer at the Etihad.

This transition also reunited him with Jason Wilcox, the club’s current director of football.

He added: “Jason and his team are well-prepared to carry out this plan. Observing the progress made since last season suggests a promising direction for us, highlighting the need to mix experienced players with young talent.”

“At times, we might decide to invest, understanding its significance not only for the next two or three years, but for the next decade.”

Berrada believes that United is well-positioned to achieve ‘Project 150’ and secure the Premier League title within two years.

Under Ineos’s management of football operations at United, Berrada hopes for the club to claim its 21st league title by 2028, coinciding with its 150th anniversary.

He expressed: “Ideally, we achieve that next season; if not, then the following one. I’m confident we’re in a strong position.

“This season, we’ve witnessed significant progress on the pitch, and we will work to sustain that momentum.

“We will focus on investing in various club dimensions while prioritizing other off-field goals. Financial sustainability and inventive commercial strategies are imperative.”

Recently, United confirmed Carrick’s permanent role as head coach.

The 44-year-old made a strong impact during his interim period after Ruben Amorim’s departure in January, successfully guiding the Red Devils to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification.

Berrada commended Carrick’s influence and potential: “He’s rightfully earned the opportunity to continue leading the team for the next two years or more,” he remarked.

Characterizing Carrick as “someone who is calm yet determined,” Berrada expressed confidence that he and his team would strive for success.

Berrada acknowledged that United is “still facing financial challenges,” but highlighted improvements since his arrival.

He expressed sorrow for the 450 employees laid off due to Ratcliffe’s cost-cutting measures, recognizing that “trust” has had to be rebuilt within Carrington’s operations.

Nevertheless, Berrada quickly noted that Amorim deserves recognition for his efforts in elevating United’s standards.

When asked if hiring the Portuguese was a miscalculation, Berrada replied: “For me, it’s not entirely black or white.

“Yes, in the sense that it didn’t work out, but Ruben merits significant credit for many aspects. He contributed to raising the standards within the dressing room.

“I’m confident he will evolve into an exceptional coach, and I wish him the best, but we felt a change was necessary, and it proved to be advantageous.”

Berrada had supported Amorim’s hiring after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal in November 2024, leading negotiations after a trip to Portugal.
