Cash App Unveils Tap-and-Pay Wand

Cash App, the digital wallet app, is launching a new device this Thursday, inspired by the popular social media trend of using a homemade magic wand to pay for items in the real world, discreetly hiding a tap-and-pay credit card. Now, you can own a real wand to join in the excitement. Priced at $25, this wand is part of Cash App’s cutting-edge NFC-powered tag hardware range, which the company plans to expand with more designs in the coming months.

As per the company, these tags connect to the Cash App Card and work at locations that accept Visa’s tap-to-pay system. Users can activate the tags by linking the wand device (illustrated above) to the app, and no minimum balance is necessary for the tag to function.

Equipped with a keychain ring, the wand can easily be attached to bags or clipped onto clothing. This device is particularly handy for making payments in scenarios where accessing your phone might be tricky, such as at concerts or sports events. The fun of tapping a wand to complete a purchase adds an element of enjoyment, especially for special events like birthday shopping excursions, appealing to a younger demographic.

Wand users will receive immediate spending alerts post-transaction, and they can lock or unlock the tag through the app whenever they choose. If the tag is lost, users can deactivate it via the app. The company also keeps an eye on transactions to identify any fraudulent activity, ensuring user safety.

“As digital wallets remain unseen and physical cards often get lost in wallets, Cash App Tags reimagine this concept. We see a remarkable chance to make payments both visible and social for the first time,” expressed Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block.

The company plans to reveal additional tag variations, including limited-edition releases, in the coming months, with some models set to be offered permanently this summer.

With this introduction, Cash App is primarily targeting Gen Z users. To engage younger audiences, the Block-owned fintech launched accounts for teens in 2021, and this year, it introduced a parent-controlled debit card for kids aged six to 12.
