Anthropic Engages in Discussions with Samsung for Development of a New Custom Chip
In April, Reuters reported that Anthropic was exploring the production of its own AI chips due to ongoing chip shortages. It appears that the company is now making substantial progress towards achieving this objective.
On Thursday, The Information shared that Anthropic is in talks with Samsung to explore a potential partnership for the forthcoming chip. However, the report suggests that Anthropic is still undecided on the chip’s intended purpose, how it will integrate with server infrastructure, or its performance specifications.
When contacted for a comment, Anthropic conveyed to TechCrunch that a diverse hardware configuration, utilizing chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia, is essential to its computational strategy. Regarding a possible collaboration with Samsung, the company noted it had no further details to provide.
Various AI companies are focusing on developing custom chips—both to create specialized hardware for specific computing tasks and to gain a level of autonomy from Nvidia, the leading player in the chip industry.
Anthropic’s recent announcement may be a strategic move in response to its chief competitor, OpenAI, which last week joined forces with Broadcom to introduce its own custom-built inference processor called “Jalapeño.” OpenAI asserts that this chip is more efficient, offering enhanced performance-per-watt than rival chips. Both Amazon and Google incorporate custom TPUs within their cloud services.
Samsung is already a crucial player in the AI landscape, acting as a key partner to Nvidia by producing chips essential for training or operating AI models. In exchange, Samsung utilizes Nvidia’s software for chip manufacturing. The two companies are working together on an AI chip factory in South Korea and have also investigated potential collaborations with Google regarding chip production.
