Erebor Bank Aims for $8B Valuation with Successful Crypto Banking Strategy
Erebor Bank, a digital-first financial institution, is engaged in fundraising talks that could value the bank at no less than $8 billion, nearly doubling its previous valuation of $4.35 billion established at the close of last year.
Summary
- Erebor Bank aims to raise funds that may value it at a minimum of $8 billion.
- Deposits have increased from $1.1 billion to over $4 billion since March, alongside onboarding nearly 400 new customers.
- The bank’s emphasis on crypto and its national bank charter have strengthened its position in the AI and tech sectors.
As reported by Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the situation, the proposed fundraising comes after a significant boost in Erebor’s deposits, just months post-launch. If the funding round wraps up at the projected valuation, it would rank as one of the largest recent fundraising efforts for a U.S. digital bank serving the tech and crypto realms.
Founded by Palmer Luckey, known for creating Oculus, Erebor has attracted investments from notable Silicon Valley personalities such as Andreessen Horowitz, Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, and Lux Capital.
The bank is focusing on defense tech companies, hard-tech industries, AI infrastructure, and crypto enterprises, offering services like blockchain-based payments, crypto-backed lending, and financing for industrial endeavors.
Deposit increase bolsters Erebor’s fundraising potential
According to Bloomberg, customer deposits have jumped to over $4 billion from $1.1 billion by the end of March. During this period, the startup has drawn in close to 400 new clients, providing compelling proof of the demand for its banking services.
Luckey stated to Bloomberg that this recent surge in deposits has primarily come from new clients rather than his own business interests, refuting claims that the growth relied on affiliated companies.
These fundraising discussions follow the bank’s launch earlier this year, with the impressive deposit growth being a vital factor in its current fundraising efforts. Bloomberg highlights that the specifics of the proposed funding round are still being finalized.
National charter expands crypto banking capabilities
The fundraising negotiations coincide with the bank’s achievement of regulatory milestones that allow it to expand its operations within a federal banking framework.
As noted by crypto.news, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has granted Erebor conditional preliminary approval for a national bank charter, enabling it to serve the innovation economy, including crypto and AI startups. This accolade positions Erebor as the first newly established bank to secure such credentials since Comptroller Jonathan V. Gould took the role in July 2025.
In a statement from the OCC, Gould described this approval as part of his dedication to nurturing a “dynamic and diverse federal banking system.” He asserted that the regulator would refrain from imposing “blanket barriers” on institutions involved in digital asset activities, provided they operate responsibly.
Earlier this year, Erebor became the first national bank chartered during President Donald Trump’s second term, further enhancing its regulatory position as it expanded its digital banking offerings.
With a keen focus on crypto, AI infrastructure, defense technology, and industrial sectors, Erebor seeks to meet the needs of industries that have historically struggled to access traditional financial services, particularly in the aftermath of the Silicon Valley Bank collapse.
