Microsoft Launches New AI Deployment Firm Backed by $2.5 Billion Investment
On Thursday, Microsoft unveiled a new division called Microsoft Frontier Company, designed to enhance successful enterprise AI deployments using the company’s existing AI tools. This effort will be bolstered by a $2.5 billion investment from Microsoft and a dedicated team of 6,000 industry and engineering experts.
In a statement about this new initiative, Judson Althoff, Microsoft’s CEO of Commercial Business, clarified that this venture goes beyond what has traditionally been known as Forward-Deployed Engineering (FDE). “This surpasses what has been labeled as Forward-Deployed Engineering,” Althoff emphasized, “and will establish the largest, most effective, outcome-driven engineering organization in the industry.”
Nonetheless, the initiative bears similarities to various FDE-focused AI projects announced in recent months. Just two days earlier, Amazon Web Services revealed a $1 billion investment into its AI deployment program, explicitly embracing the FDE model. Additionally, both OpenAI and Anthropic have initiated comparable ventures, although those projects also encompass external funding from private equity firms.
Microsoft’s existing customer base will provide a significant advantage to the new initiative, as the company has already deployed engineers across a large portion of the Fortune 500. The announcement highlights early partnerships with the London Stock Exchange Group, Unilever, Land O’Lakes, and Accenture.
