Police Sergeant Charged with Accepting Bribe for Woman’s Court Release

Polokwane – A 44-year-old police sergeant has been summoned to court for allegedly facilitating the unauthorized release of a foreign national who was in custody and awaiting deportation.

Sources reveal that this sergeant, connected to the Northam Police Station in Limpopo, was serving as a court orderly during the incident involving the unlawful escape that took place on 30 October 2023.

The situation became apparent when inmates returned to the Northam Police Station after their court hearings.

During a routine check, two commanding officers found that a female detainee, due for deportation, had not been returned to her cell.

Reports suggest that upon questioning, the sergeant claimed he was on his way back to the police station but did not show up for duty the next day.

The foreign national was ultimately located and re-arrested in 2023.

It is alleged that a significant amount of money was involved in the actions leading to her illegal release by the sergeant.

The case has been handed over to the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for further scrutiny.

Following their investigation, the findings were submitted to the Senior Public Prosecutor for evaluation.

After the prosecutor’s review, the sergeant received his summons on Friday, 3 July 2026.

He is facing charges of corruption and complicity, with his first court appearance slated for 31 July 2026 at the Northam Magistrate’s Court.

Major-General Jan Scheepers, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, stated: “This arrest conveys a strong message that any officer who violates the law and compromises our integrity will be held accountable.”

“I appreciate the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for their thorough investigation that led to these charges.”

The sergeant is scheduled to appear in court on 31 July 2026 to address the charges of corruption and complicity.
