Meta Unveils Muse: An AI-Driven Image Generation Tool

Meta has unveiled its newest AI image generation tool, Muse Image, developed by the company’s dedicated AI division, Meta Superintelligence Labs.

This cutting-edge feature, initially referred to by the internal code name Mango, will be available for free through the Meta AI app, as well as on Instagram Stories and WhatsApp.

What can Muse help you create? Its features are similar to existing AI image generators — for instance, you can produce a variety of quirky and cartoon-like images.

If you’re experiencing a creative block and finding it hard to come up with unique prompts, Meta notes that Muse offers “presets” — pre-designed image prompts intended to “ignite your creativity.”

A supporting video showcases additional uses for Muse. One example is generating custom advertisements (AI’s influence in advertising has been growing lately) or exploring interior design options (the video features a user utilizing Muse to visualize how a thrifted couch might appear in their garage). This functionality is set to be integrated with Facebook Marketplace, Meta’s platform for second-hand goods.

The model also allows for prompt-based image editing, facilitating the creation of images ready for sharing across Meta’s suite of applications and platforms.

“Request it to generate an image of you in front of a famous landmark, efficiently remove an unwanted photobomber from your picture, or craft a personalized prompt to generate a functional QR code,” the company suggests.

At the same time, Meta is launching a new array of AI effects for Instagram Stories powered by Muse. These effects feature a selection of customizable filters that can enhance existing photos.

Meta reassures users that the new AI model is free for “everyday creation,” although a subscription to Meta’s plans will be required once a limit is reached.

Moreover, the company has announced that Muse Video — presumably another AI video creation tool — is “currently in development.” TechCrunch has reached out to Meta for more information.

Over the past year, Meta has introduced several AI applications and services, including an assistant named Creator and an app called Pocket, designed for coding video games. Despite facing criticism for its ambiguous AI strategy, the company plans to make significant investments in AI infrastructure this year as it continues to broaden its offerings.
