Crypto VC Firm Paradigm Raises $1.2 Billion to Invest in Innovative Startups
Crypto venture capital firm Paradigm has raised $1.2 billion, marking its third venture fund and fourth overall, as announced by the firm’s founder, Matt Huang, on Wednesday.
For Paradigm, the technical frontier goes beyond its cryptocurrency origins. This fund is designed to expand its investment focus to include robotics and AI. This strategic shift aligns with the growing interest in the AI market in recent years, especially as the crypto sector faces challenges.
In a blog post by Huang and the firm’s managing partner Alana Palmedo, they clarified that Paradigm is not moving away from cryptocurrency. The firm plans to “continue investing in crypto and the reimagining of markets and the financial system,” while also “researching and developing tools to enhance the industry, ranging from blockchain solutions (Foundry, Reth) to agent technologies (Centaur) and security initiatives (EVMbench, a collaboration with OpenAI),” they noted.
Nonetheless, AI and robotics are crucial parts of their agenda. In an interview with Bloomberg, Palmedo stated, “there’s so much else happening right now that’s hard to overlook.”
Paradigm’s Fund III has already made several key investments, including in drone delivery firm Zipline and space startup True Anomaly.
Established in 2018 by Huang, a former partner at Sequoia, and Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, the firm filed to raise this fund earlier this year, according to SEC filings. The fund size is slightly below the $1.5 billion that the Wall Street Journal reported in February as the firm’s target.
