Figma Acquires Team Behind Vibe-Coding App

Figma is advancing from its original purpose as a design platform by adding new AI features and simplifying coding and prototyping processes right within its canvas. To achieve this, it has acquired the team behind Bud (previously known as Orchids), which is a vibe-coding and AI agent platform.

“Figma is arguably one of the defining product companies of our time, uniquely positioned to leverage this transformation. It acts as a cradle for ideas, where they evolve and take shape, making it the perfect venue for this exciting new era of work,” remarked Bud’s CEO Kevin Lu on X.

Originally backed by Y Combinator, this startup began as a vibe-coding platform that allowed users to rapidly create applications across mobile, web, Slack, browsers, and more. It eventually evolved into Bud, a platform designed to facilitate access to various services, navigate the web, and automate tasks through code writing.

As part of the acquisition, operations for both Bud and Orchids will halt by July 18, urging users to migrate their projects by this date.

Earlier this year, a BBC report, citing a security researcher, revealed that applications built on Orchids were at risk of cyberattacks.

Figma has not disclosed its specific plans for the newly acquired team, but recent releases indicate that the public company aims to deliver more comprehensive tools for application development and prototyping, extending beyond mere brainstorming of static concepts. Last year, it launched Figma Make for web app creation. This year, it has integrated with tools like Codex and Claude Code, and has introduced its own agents.
