Judge Approves Elon Musk’s $1.5 Million SEC Settlement Amid Concerns
A judge has imposed a $1.5 million penalty on Elon Musk to settle a lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, despite expressing “serious concerns” about the ruling.
As reported by Bloomberg, U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan noted that her court would approve the settlement.
Sooknanan’s approval wraps up a lawsuit the SEC brought against Musk in early 2025 regarding his management of the social media platform previously known as Twitter. The case, initiated just days before Donald Trump’s inauguration, revolved around Musk’s delayed disclosure of his increased ownership stake in the company in 2022.
The SEC asserted that Musk’s failure to promptly announce his share ultimately allowed him to save a remarkable $150 million.
In May, Musk reached a settlement with the SEC, which mandated a trust in his name to pay the $1.5 million fine, without acknowledging any wrongdoing.
Earlier, Sooknanan had voiced concerns about whether Musk was afforded “preferential treatment” by the Trump administration, considering Musk’s financial backing of Trump’s campaign during the 2024 presidential election.
In her ruling, Sooknanan highlighted that her court’s responsibility is to evaluate whether the proposed consent judgment meets the criteria of fairness and reasonableness, or if it instead “undermines judicial authority.”
“Although the Court holds substantial doubts about the settlement reached in this case, it cannot determine that the settlement fails to meet that high standard,” Sooknanan remarked.
