Character.AI Enters the Microdrama Arena with Unique Offerings—But There’s a Twist

Recently, microdramas have surged in popularity, prompting a diverse array of companies in the attention economy—from specialized microdrama applications to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, as well as streaming services such as Peacock, Amazon Prime, and India’s JioHotstar—to create offerings designed to take advantage of this trend.

Character.AI is also exploring this burgeoning market by producing its own microdramas with AI characters that users can engage with. An intriguing feature of this initiative allows users aged 18 and above to interact with the characters, ask questions, and even partake in role-playing various storylines.

The startup is launching three initial microdramas: a romantic story named “Last Summer,” a horror narrative called “The Nighttime Game,” and a survival-themed drama reminiscent of The Hunger Games titled “Eden Fall.”

Character.AI asserts that these dramas are generated using AI production technologies, with a long-term goal of empowering users to create their own characters and series.

“Starting with a studio-led model, c.ai Series allows our production team to shape the format, enhance workflow, and understand audience preferences related to Character-native Microdrama entertainment. Ultimately, we intend to translate these insights and methods into creator tools, enabling users to design their own series with original Characters to share with a global audience,” a company representative shared with TechCrunch.

This announcement is part of a suite of new features the startup has rolled out after shifting its focus to entertainment-driven offerings last year. In April, it unveiled a tool called Lorebook, which lets users create world-building content for character references, along with another feature named Books, which allows users to delve into classic literary works or role-play as characters from those tales.

On Thursday, the company also disclosed that it is testing a feature called c.ai FM, enabling users to produce audio series, and another named c.ai Reads for fiction creation. The audio series functionality is currently available to select users via its experimental c.ai Labs program, which the company notes has been utilized by professional writers to craft serialized audio dramas.

Evidently, there is a demand for this kind of entertainment. According to Sensor Tower, users dedicated over 950 minutes to Character.AI each month during the first half of 2026.
