Elon Musk Unveils New Feature: X to Send Direct Messages for Posts You’ve Engaged With That Have Been Corrected

X’s Community Notes, a platform for crowdsourced fact-checking, is poised for an update that will alert users via direct messages whenever a post they’ve interacted with is amended. This update, revealed by X owner Elon Musk, is not yet active, and a timeline for its rollout remains unspecified.

The purpose of this update is to address a major criticism of Community Notes — the delayed arrival of corrections. Misleading content can gain traction and spread widely while its accuracy is still being examined, causing harm by the time a correction is issued. By proactively notifying users about corrections, X aims to improve the visibility of these notes beyond the original posts. This may also allow users who unknowingly shared incorrect information to offer apologies if they were misled.

Community Notes was initially launched while X was still known as Twitter, prior to Musk’s ownership.

The initiative aimed to provide an alternative approach to counter misinformation on the platform, shifting away from Twitter (now X) being the sole moderation authority. Instead, contributors to Community Notes could suggest corrections and include key details or missing facts to posts. A correction goes live when it receives ratings as useful from individuals with diverse viewpoints, achieving consensus.

A similar system was subsequently introduced by Meta as part of a broader moderation reform last year, which concluded the company’s partnerships with fact-checkers.

While Community Notes presents a viable solution for a company aiming to shift away from fact-checking responsibilities, scalability has proven to be a challenge. A 2025 report by the Spanish fact-checking organization Maldita indicated that 85% of proposed notes on X go unseen by users, with only 8.3% being published and made visible. Another report from the Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA) analyzed 1.76 million notes published between January 2021 and March 2025, reporting an even higher unpublished rate of 90%.

Critics argue that this diminishes Community Notes’ effectiveness in highlighting information when it is most needed. They also claim that users often remain unaware when posts they have viewed or supported are later corrected, as there has been no system to notify them.

Musk’s proposal to send notifications via X Chat (DMs) could effectively address this latter concern, assuming it is successfully executed. X has been approached for comments, but no immediate response has been received.
