Bafana Coach Broos to Return from Belgium This Month—Resignation Speculations Addressed

Johannesburg – The allegations surrounding Hugo Broos, the most accomplished coach of South Africa’s senior men’s national team, are unfounded.

On Friday, July 10, 2026, the South African Football Association (SAFA) released a statement denying claims that Broos had resigned as head coach of Bafana Bafana.

“Broos remains the head coach of Bafana Bafana, and any opposing claims are completely inaccurate,” SAFA stated on X.

“This is not the first time rumors have circulated about the Belgian coach’s departure following the success of the South African senior men’s national team in an international competition.

“In March 2024, there were speculations regarding Broos potentially joining the Tunisian national team immediately after Bafana Bafana clinched bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.”

Broos has just returned with the squad from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they made notable strides during the tournament held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Bafana Bafana progressed to the tournament’s second round for the first time, triumphing over South Korea 1-0 in their final group match in Monterrey, Mexico.

“The coach is presently in Belgium and is expected to return to South Africa later this month,” SAFA confirmed.
