David Golding’s Family Seeks Justice Through Private Prosecution Following His Tragic Car Accident
Cape Town – A heartbroken family is pursuing justice following a devastating incident that claimed the life of their 27-year-old son, who was severely injured when his car was hit by a pickup truck allegedly driven by someone under the influence.
The Private Prosecution Unit of AfriForum is advocating for David Golding, who tragically passed away on Youth Day, June 16, after a collision on Ou Kaapse Weg involving a bakkie purportedly driven by Richard Tinsley while intoxicated.
Unfortunately, Golding succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Tinsley was transported to a hospital for treatment after surviving the crash.
“Evidence indicates that Tinsley started drinking early in the day, visiting multiple bars and restaurants,” remarked AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit in a press release dated Friday, July 10, 2026.
“Numerous witnesses, including both staff and patrons, along with video evidence, confirm reports of his excessive drinking, erratic behavior, and clear signs of intoxication.”
“Reports suggest that by the time he left his final venue, he had consumed a significant amount of alcohol.”
“In sharp contrast, David was merely heading home after a delightful evening with friends and intended to stop for a late-night snack.”
The Private Prosecution Unit of AfriForum highlighted that records confirm Golding was on his way home when Tinsley’s vehicle collided with his shortly after he departed from the last location.
Emergency responders successfully extracted David from his vehicle; regrettably, he could not be revived, whereas Tinsley was hospitalized and reportedly underwent surgery.
Advocate Gerrie Nel, who heads the Unit, commended the thorough work of investigators from Fish Hoek Police Station, noting issues that often arise in culpable homicide cases.
“Delays in gathering vital evidence not only prolong investigations but also heighten the risk of losing crucial details and diminishing recollections,” Advocate Nel remarked.
“Such circumstances could eventually lead to cases being dropped from the court calendar or not prosecuted at all.”
Golding’s parents, represented by his stepfather Chris Burgess, Editor-in-Chief of Landbouweekblad, have turned to AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit in their quest for justice.
“This effort is for my son, David, and for every innocent victim of such tragedies that have impacted my family. I wouldn’t wish the pain we’re feeling on anyone,” Burgess stated.
Advocate Nel underscores the urgent need for the criminal justice system to react promptly to safeguard society from the risks posed by reckless and intoxicated drivers.
“It is essential for this case to be comprehensively investigated, as the South African Police Service bears the responsibility to tackle drunk driving and ensure the safety of innocent road users,” Advocate Nel concluded.
