Already Successful and Affluent: The Unrelenting Drive of Today’s Tech Titans

A fascinating trend is emerging among accomplished individuals. They are re-entering the arena, seemingly motivated by the fear of missing out on the crucial developments in AI and, likely, the alluring possibility of amassing even greater wealth — potentially a significant amount.

Tom Blomfield, co-founder of GoCardless and Monzo and a mentor to founders at Y Combinator for 4.5 years, announced on Monday that he is stepping away from his current position to join the compute team at Anthropic — not in an executive capacity, but as a technical staff member.

He is not alone in making this shift. Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger took the role of Chief Product Officer at Anthropic in 2024, while Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI who later led Tesla’s AI initiatives and founded Eureka Labs, joined Anthropic’s pre-training team in May, expressing a sentiment akin to Blomfield’s, remarking that “the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative.”

However, not everyone is entering established labs. Chamath Palihapitiya, known as the “SPAC King” and focused largely on boardroom activities and the “All In” podcast since leaving Facebook in 2011, has recently taken on his first full-time operational role in over a decade as CEO of 8090 Labs, his AI coding startup, which he revealed alongside a $135 million Series A funding round led by Salesforce Ventures. Palihapitiya stated on X, “I am convinced that what we are building now is even more significant, so there was no decision to make except to be all in.”

In a similar vein, Eric Wu, who led Opendoor for a decade before stepping back in 2023, recently founded NavigateAI, an AI “copilot” tailored for construction workers, supported by $25 million in seed funding. In a recent discussion, Wu reflected on his choice to pivot to an AI startup, stating, “I knew if I looked back in 10 years and didn’t pursue something related to it, I would likely regret that.”

A clear indication of how eager those who have already achieved success are to engage in what they perceive as the nascent stages of AI can be seen in their job titles. The designation “Member of Technical Staff” is the intentionally flat, hierarchically neutral title used by both Anthropic and OpenAI for almost all individuals on their technical teams, irrespective of their level. This is the same title Blomfield is adopting.

It’s also the title Peter Bailis chose in March, shortly after becoming the CTO at Workday, overseeing AI strategy within an $8 billion revenue corporation. Bailis transitioned to Anthropic in less than a year.
