Hugging Face CEO Calls for ‘Radical Transparency’ After Unprecedented OpenAI Breach

After OpenAI’s recent acknowledgment of a breach involving one of its models on the AI platform Hugging Face, CEO Clem Delangue shared on X that he plans to visit San Francisco for “a little chat with that ‘rogue agent.’”

In a follow-up post on Saturday, Delangue outlined his requests to OpenAI. He stressed the importance of “radical transparency,” urging OpenAI to “release the traces from the ‘rogue’ agents so the entire research community can investigate what happened.”

Additionally, he called for “enhanced capabilities for defenders,” suggesting that OpenAI invest $100 million in computing resources “to help the Hugging Face community build strong cyber defenses using both open and proprietary models.”

Delangue stated, “The first autonomous agent cyberattack is an unprecedented event. It requires an unprecedented response!”

While the attack was characterized by its autonomous nature, cybersecurity experts noted that human error may have played a role — specifically, OpenAI’s inadequate configuration of what should have been a fully isolated testing environment.
