Winamp Returns with a Revamped Music Player Powered by Deezer

In the pre-Spotify era, Winamp was the preferred music player among many music lovers. Now, this nostalgic brand is preparing for a comeback.

On Wednesday, Winamp announced a partnership with Deezer, where Deezer will support Winamp’s upcoming premium music subscription service. This collaboration enables Winamp to leverage Deezer’s white-label technology and vast licensed music catalog, while maintaining its distinctive branding and user experience.

This partnership is part of a larger initiative to relaunch the next-generation Winamp Player, anticipated to launch in the first half of 2027. The companies assert that the new player seeks to “reimagine the music player for the streaming age,” combining premium music streaming with local music libraries, internet radio, podcasts, personal cloud collections, and various audio sources all within a single application.

While many specifics are still under wraps, Winamp emphasizes a commitment to personalization, featuring a customizable interface, social functionalities, and innovative methods to discover, organize, and enjoy music. The company assures users that its subscription service will deliver “a fundamentally different experience compared to today’s traditional digital streaming platforms.”

Though dedicated Winamp fans from the MP3 days may be excited about this news, it’s uncertain how many will choose to pay for yet another music subscription. The streaming market is already populated with major competitors like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. Nonetheless, Winamp notes that its free desktop player boasts over 40 million active users.

The announcement also signals a revival of retro technology. Cassette tapes, MP3 players, and even iPods have seen a resurgence lately as users crave nostalgic ways to enjoy music. Winamp aims for its music player to modernize its appeal while incorporating contemporary streaming functionalities.

Over the years, Winamp has undergone many changes, and this could mark its most deliberate return to its loyal fanbase. During the web3 trend, it explored the integration of NFTs, allowing users to connect music-related NFTs to their player. Previous plans included transforming Winamp into a cross-platform mobile audio application. Recently, the focus has shifted toward supporting creators with tools for monetization, fan engagement, and music distribution services.
