Congress’s Preferred AI: ChatGPT – Wired24

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has emerged as Congress’ AI tool of choice in terms of funding, according to a report by CNBC.

OpenAI secured about 90% of all spending on AI tools by House offices, committees, and institutional accounts for the year ending March 31, as per House disbursement records. CNBC reports that Congress allocated approximately $100,580 in 798 transactions for ChatGPT, out of a total AI expenditure of at least $113,740. Anthropic’s Claude ranked second with $13,160 across 37 transactions.

Democratic offices spent $54,165 on AI acquisitions, which is three times the $15,782 spent by Republican offices.

The findings exclude any Congressional AI usage from free accounts or AI integrated into broader software contracts.

Congressional staff are utilizing ChatGPT and other tools to draft memos, summarize and analyze legislation, respond to constituents, prepare hearing materials, organize policy research, and even create social media posts.
