IBM Collaborates with OpenAI to Advance Enterprise AI Initiatives

On Thursday, IBM unveiled its partnership with OpenAI, aiming to broaden access to the AI firm’s models and tools for a wider array of enterprise clients. This collaboration allows OpenAI to engage with prominent global businesses via IBM’s comprehensive consulting services, intensifying competition within the corporate AI investment landscape.

Although the details of the partnership remain largely undisclosed, it builds upon IBM’s earlier association with Anthropic. IBM has indicated that OpenAI and its personnel will collaborate to enhance AI solutions and tailor services for various sectors, including finance, government, telecommunications, and retail.

As part of this initiative, IBM intends to form a dedicated OpenAI team within its consulting division, with the objective of training and certifying tens of thousands of consultants—primarily by upskilling existing staff—on OpenAI’s technologies in the months ahead. This was communicated by Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, during a discussion with TechCrunch.

The training will concentrate on OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity solutions, and consulting services. Furthermore, IBM aims to create a specialized group of “Forward Deployed Experts,” who will receive training through OpenAI’s Partner Network, as noted by Healy.

IBM plans to integrate OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into its IBM Consulting Advantage platform, which is designed for consultants, to improve AI integration across essential business functions.

This partnership represents a significant milestone for OpenAI as it strives to strengthen its foothold in the enterprise landscape by collaborating with consulting firms and technology providers. This shift transforms the competitive dynamics for AI model developers, moving the focus from simply creating advanced models to actively partnering with enterprise clients and delivering holistic solutions. OpenAI has previously worked with IT service companies like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services and intends to collaborate with top global systems integrators to provide AI solutions to enterprises.

For IBM, the partnership with OpenAI enhances its collection of advanced AI collaborations while embracing a model-agnostic approach, integrating its proprietary Granite family of AI models with solutions from different vendors. The company is positioning itself as a hub for diverse AI models through its watsonx platform and worldwide consulting initiatives.

This collaboration comes at a pivotal moment for IBM as it aims to accelerate growth in its AI division, having recently revised its 2026 revenue forecasts following disappointing quarterly results last month. In the latest earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna emphasized that AI is crucial for long-term growth, asserting that AI adoption will bolster demand for IBM’s mainframe services rather than reduce it.

In June, IBM and OpenAI inaugurated the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, focused on cybersecurity. This new agreement builds on that groundwork by incorporating OpenAI’s AI models into IBM Autonomous Security, the company’s multi-agent-driven cybersecurity solution.
