IBM Collaborates with OpenAI to Strengthen Enterprise AI Initiatives
On Thursday, IBM revealed its partnership with OpenAI, aimed at broadening access to the AI company’s models and tools for a wider array of enterprise clients. This collaboration allows OpenAI to engage with top global firms via IBM’s extensive consulting services, heightening competition in the corporate AI investment arena.
Although the specifics of the collaboration are still confidential, it follows IBM’s previous partnership with Anthropic. IBM has announced that both OpenAI and IBM will collaborate to promote AI solutions and tailor offerings for sectors including financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail.
As part of this initiative, IBM intends to establish a dedicated OpenAI team within IBM Consulting, with a goal to train and certify tens of thousands of consultants—primarily by upskilling existing staff—on OpenAI’s technologies in the coming months, as noted by Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, during a TechCrunch interview.
The training will emphasize OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity solutions, and consulting expertise. Additionally, IBM plans to form a specialized group of “Forward Deployed Experts,” who will undergo training via OpenAI’s Partner Network, according to Healy.
IBM has indicated its aim to integrate OpenAI’s advanced models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage, its AI platform aimed at consultants, to improve AI integration across vital business functions.
This partnership marks a significant move for OpenAI as it seeks to reinforce its foothold in the enterprise market through collaborations with consulting firms and technology providers. This transition shifts the competitive landscape for AI model creators from merely developing superior models to attracting corporate clients and offering comprehensive solutions. OpenAI has already formed alliances with IT service providers such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, with plans to collaborate with major global systems integrators to deliver AI solutions to enterprise clients.
For IBM, this collaboration with OpenAI enhances its portfolio of advanced AI partnerships while adopting a model-agnostic strategy, blending its own Granite family of AI models with offerings from third-party vendors. The company is positioning itself as an integrator of various AI models through its watsonx platform and global consulting initiatives.
This collaboration arrives at a crucial moment for IBM as it seeks to accelerate growth in its AI segment following a revision of its 2026 revenue projections last month due to unsatisfactory quarterly results. During the latest earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna underscored that AI is a key driver for long-term growth, suggesting that AI adoption will enhance, rather than replace, the demand for IBM’s mainframe services.
In June, IBM and OpenAI launched the cybersecurity-focused OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. This new agreement builds upon that foundation by integrating OpenAI’s AI models into IBM Autonomous Security, the company’s multi-agent-driven cybersecurity solution.
