IBM Collaborates with OpenAI to Strengthen Enterprise AI Initiatives
On Thursday, IBM revealed its partnership with OpenAI, designed to broaden access to the AI company’s models and tools for a wider array of enterprise clients. This collaboration allows OpenAI to engage with prominent global corporations through IBM’s extensive consulting services, heightening competition in the corporate AI investment sector.
Although specific details of the partnership are currently under wraps, it follows IBM’s prior collaboration with Anthropic. IBM has announced that both OpenAI and itself will collaborate to enhance AI solutions and tailor offerings for sectors including financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail.
As part of this initiative, IBM is set to form a dedicated OpenAI team within IBM Consulting, with plans to train and certify tens of thousands of consultants—primarily by upskilling existing staff—on OpenAI’s technologies over the coming months, as indicated by Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, in an interview with TechCrunch.
The training will emphasize OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity solutions, and consulting expertise. Additionally, IBM plans to create a specialized group of “Forward Deployed Experts,” who will be trained via OpenAI’s Partner Network, according to Healy.
IBM aims to incorporate OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage, its AI platform tailored for consultants, to improve AI integration across critical business processes.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for OpenAI as it seeks to strengthen its footprint in the enterprise market by aligning with consulting firms and technology providers. This transition shifts the competitive landscape for AI model developers from solely creating superior models to engaging enterprise clients and delivering comprehensive solutions. OpenAI has previously partnered with IT service providers like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services and aims to collaborate with top global systems integrators to present AI solutions to enterprise customers.
For IBM, this partnership with OpenAI enhances its suite of advanced AI collaborations while adopting a model-agnostic approach, merging its own Granite family of AI models with those from other providers. The company is positioning itself as a facilitator of varied AI models through its watsonx platform and global consulting initiatives.
This collaboration arrives at a critical juncture for IBM as it seeks to accelerate growth in its AI division, following an adjustment of its 2026 revenue predictions last month due to underwhelming quarterly results. In the most recent earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna underscored that AI is key to long-term growth, suggesting that AI adoption will complement, not replace, the demand for IBM’s mainframe services.
In June, IBM and OpenAI launched the cybersecurity-focused OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. This newly formed agreement builds on that foundation by integrating OpenAI’s AI models into IBM Autonomous Security, the firm’s multi-agent-driven cybersecurity solution.
