IBM Collaborates with OpenAI to Strengthen Enterprise AI Initiatives
On Thursday, IBM revealed its partnership with OpenAI, aiming to broaden access to the AI company’s models and tools for a wider range of enterprise clients. This collaboration allows OpenAI to engage with prominent global companies via IBM’s comprehensive consulting services, enhancing competition in the corporate AI investment space.
Although the details of the collaboration remain under wraps, it follows IBM’s earlier partnership with Anthropic. IBM has announced that both OpenAI and its team will collaborate to refine AI solutions and tailor services for various industries, including finance, government, telecommunications, and retail.
As part of this initiative, IBM intends to create a dedicated OpenAI team within its consulting branch, with plans to train and certify tens of thousands of consultants—primarily by upskilling current employees—on OpenAI’s technologies in the months ahead. This was disclosed by Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, during an interview with TechCrunch.
The training will emphasize OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity solutions, and consulting expertise. Additionally, IBM aims to establish a specialized group of “Forward Deployed Experts,” who will receive training through OpenAI’s Partner Network, Healy noted.
IBM seeks to incorporate OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into its IBM Consulting Advantage platform, specifically designed for consultants, to enhance AI integration throughout critical business operations.
This partnership marks a significant moment for OpenAI as it works to strengthen its foothold in the enterprise market by collaborating with consulting firms and technology providers. This transition shifts the competitive landscape for AI model developers from merely developing superior models to actively engaging enterprise clients and offering holistic solutions. OpenAI has previously teamed up with IT service providers such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services and aims to collaborate with leading global systems integrators to deliver AI solutions to enterprises.
For IBM, this collaboration with OpenAI enhances its portfolio of advanced AI partnerships while adopting a model-agnostic approach, merging its proprietary Granite family of AI models with those from various vendors. The company is positioning itself as a facilitator of diverse AI models through its watsonx platform and global consulting initiatives.
This collaboration surfaces at a critical juncture for IBM as it aims to accelerate growth in its AI division, following a recent adjustment to its 2026 revenue forecasts due to disappointing quarterly results last month. In the latest earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna emphasized that AI is central to long-term growth, suggesting that AI adoption will enhance, rather than supplant, the demand for IBM’s mainframe services.
In June, IBM and OpenAI launched the cybersecurity-focused OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. This new agreement builds on that foundation by integrating OpenAI’s AI models into IBM Autonomous Security, the company’s multi-agent-driven cybersecurity solution.
