IBM Collaborates with OpenAI to Strengthen Enterprise AI Initiatives

On Thursday, IBM unveiled its collaboration with OpenAI, aimed at broadening access to the AI company’s models and tools for a wider range of enterprise clients. This partnership allows OpenAI to engage with top global corporations through IBM’s vast consulting services, intensifying competition in the corporate AI investment landscape.

The details of the collaboration remain under wraps, but it follows IBM’s earlier partnership with Anthropic. IBM has disclosed that OpenAI and its team will collaborate to improve AI solutions and tailor services for various sectors such as finance, government, telecommunications, and retail.

As part of this initiative, IBM intends to establish a dedicated OpenAI team within its consulting division, aiming to train and certify tens of thousands of consultants—primarily through upskilling existing staff—on OpenAI’s technologies in the months to come. This information was shared by Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, during an interview with TechCrunch.

The training will concentrate on OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity solutions, and consulting proficiencies. Additionally, IBM plans to develop a specialized team of “Forward Deployed Experts,” who will receive training through OpenAI’s Partner Network, as mentioned by Healy.

IBM aims to incorporate OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into its IBM Consulting Advantage platform, specifically designed for consultants, to enhance AI integration across critical business functions.

This partnership marks a significant moment for OpenAI as it works to strengthen its foothold in the enterprise sector by teaming up with consulting firms and technology providers. This transition alters the competitive dynamic for AI model developers, shifting the focus from merely creating superior models to actively engaging enterprise clients and delivering comprehensive solutions. OpenAI has previously partnered with IT service firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services and seeks to collaborate with leading global systems integrators to offer AI solutions to enterprises.

For IBM, this partnership with OpenAI broadens its spectrum of advanced AI alliances while adopting a model-agnostic approach, integrating its proprietary Granite family of AI models with those from multiple vendors. The company is positioning itself as a facilitator of diverse AI models through its watsonx platform and global consulting initiatives.

This collaboration emerges at a critical juncture for IBM as it seeks to boost growth in its AI division, following a recent adjustment to its 2026 revenue projections due to unsatisfactory quarterly results last month. During the latest earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna emphasized that AI is vital for long-term growth, stating that the adoption of AI will raise, rather than diminish, the demand for IBM’s mainframe services.

In June, IBM and OpenAI launched the cybersecurity-focused OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. This new agreement builds on that foundation by integrating OpenAI’s AI models into IBM Autonomous Security, the company’s multi-agent-driven cybersecurity solution.
