IBM Collaborates with OpenAI to Strengthen Enterprise AI Initiatives
On Thursday, IBM unveiled its partnership with OpenAI, aimed at broadening access to the AI company’s models and tools for a wider array of enterprise clients. This collaboration allows OpenAI to engage with top global businesses via IBM’s vast consulting services, intensifying competition in the corporate AI investment space.
Although the details of the partnership are not fully disclosed, it follows IBM’s prior alliance with Anthropic. IBM has indicated that OpenAI and its team will collaborate to enhance AI solutions and tailor services for various sectors, including finance, government, telecommunications, and retail.
As part of this effort, IBM intends to establish a dedicated OpenAI team within its consulting division, aiming to train and certify tens of thousands of consultants—mainly by upskilling existing staff—on OpenAI’s technologies in the forthcoming months. This was shared by Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, during an interview with TechCrunch.
The training will emphasize OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity solutions, and consulting expertise. Additionally, IBM plans to form a specialized group of “Forward Deployed Experts,” who will receive training through OpenAI’s Partner Network, as highlighted by Healy.
IBM seeks to integrate OpenAI’s advanced models, such as GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into its IBM Consulting Advantage platform, which is specifically designed for consultants, to improve AI integration across critical business functions.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for OpenAI as it aims to strengthen its foothold in the enterprise market by partnering with consulting firms and technology providers. This shift redefines the competitive landscape for AI model developers, transitioning the focus from merely creating superior models to actively collaborating with enterprise clients and providing comprehensive solutions. OpenAI has previously worked with IT service companies like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services and seeks to engage with leading global systems integrators to deliver AI solutions to enterprises.
For IBM, the collaboration with OpenAI broadens its array of advanced AI partnerships while adopting a model-agnostic approach, merging its proprietary Granite family of AI models with offerings from various vendors. The company is positioning itself as a facilitator of diverse AI models through its watsonx platform and global consulting initiatives.
This partnership comes at a critical time for IBM as it aims to accelerate growth in its AI division, having recently revised its 2026 revenue forecasts due to disappointing quarterly results last month. During the latest earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna emphasized that AI is crucial for long-term growth, asserting that AI adoption will increase demand for IBM’s mainframe services, rather than decrease it.
In June, IBM and OpenAI launched the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, focused on cybersecurity. This new agreement builds upon that foundation by integrating OpenAI’s AI models into IBM Autonomous Security, the company’s multi-agent-driven cybersecurity solution.
