IBM Collaborates with OpenAI to Strengthen Enterprise AI Initiatives

On Thursday, IBM revealed its partnership with OpenAI, aimed at broadening access to the AI firm’s models and tools for a wider range of enterprise clients. This collaboration allows OpenAI to connect with major global corporations via IBM’s comprehensive consulting services, heightening the competition for corporate AI funding.

While specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed, it follows IBM’s prior alliance with Anthropic. IBM indicated that both OpenAI and itself will work together to promote AI solutions and craft tailored offerings for sectors such as financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail.

As part of this initiative, IBM plans to establish a dedicated OpenAI team within IBM Consulting, with the goal of training and certifying tens of thousands of consultants—primarily by upskilling existing staff—on OpenAI’s technologies in the coming months, as noted by Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, in a TechCrunch interview.

The training will concentrate on OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity measures, and consultation solution capabilities. Moreover, IBM aims to form a specialized group of “Forward Deployed Experts,” trained through OpenAI’s Partner Network, according to Healy.

IBM has revealed its intention to integrate OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage, its AI platform crafted for consultants, to enhance AI deployment across essential business functions.

This partnership marks a significant move in OpenAI’s strategy to enhance its foothold in the enterprise sector through collaborations with consulting firms and technology providers, shifting the competitive dynamic among AI model creators from solely developing superior models to securing corporate clients and providing comprehensive solutions. OpenAI has already formed alliances with IT service providers like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, with plans to collaborate with major global systems integrators to offer AI products to enterprise clients.

For IBM, the collaboration with OpenAI enriches its array of advanced AI partnerships as it embraces a model-agnostic approach, integrating its own Granite family of AI models with solutions from third-party vendors. The company is increasingly establishing itself as an integrator of diverse AI models via its watsonx platform and global consulting strategies.

This partnership arrives at a critical juncture as IBM seeks to boost growth in its AI division after revising its 2026 revenue forecast last month due to underwhelming quarterly outcomes. During its latest earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna highlighted that AI is a vital long-term growth factor, suggesting that AI adoption will bolster—rather than replace—the demand for IBM’s mainframe services.

In June, IBM and OpenAI collaborated on the cybersecurity-focused OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. This new agreement expands that relationship by incorporating OpenAI’s AI models with IBM Autonomous Security, the company’s multi-agent-driven cybersecurity solution.
