IBM Partners with OpenAI to Boost Enterprise AI Initiatives

On Thursday, IBM announced its partnership with OpenAI, aimed at broadening the accessibility of the AI firm’s models and tools to a wider range of enterprise clients. This alliance offers OpenAI the chance to connect with significant global firms through IBM’s extensive consulting services, increasing competition for investments in corporate AI.

While the specifics of the deal are confidential, it follows IBM’s earlier collaboration with Anthropic. IBM stated that both OpenAI and IBM will work together to promote AI solutions and create tailored offerings for sectors including financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail.

As part of this collaboration, IBM plans to establish a dedicated OpenAI team within IBM Consulting, with the goal of training and certifying tens of thousands of consultants—primarily by upskilling existing employees—on OpenAI’s technologies in the coming months, according to Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, in a TechCrunch interview.

The training will concentrate on OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity protocols, and consultative solution capabilities. Furthermore, IBM aims to develop a specialized group of “Forward Deployed Experts,” trained through OpenAI’s Partner Network, as noted by Healy.

IBM has revealed plans to integrate OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage, its AI platform tailored for consultants, to enhance AI deployment across essential business operations.

This partnership marks a significant step in OpenAI’s mission to strengthen its enterprise presence through partnerships with consulting firms and technology providers, shifting the competition among AI model creators from merely building superior models to acquiring corporate clients and delivering extensive solutions. The company has previously worked with IT service firms such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, focusing on collaborations with major global systems integrators to offer AI products to enterprise customers.

For IBM, the collaboration with OpenAI enhances its portfolio of advanced AI partnerships as it adopts a model-agnostic strategy, combining its own Granite family of AI models with solutions from third-party vendors. The company is increasingly positioning itself as an integrator of diverse AI models through its watsonx platform and global consulting initiatives.

This partnership emerges at a critical juncture as IBM strives to accelerate growth in its AI division following a revision of its 2026 revenue forecast last month due to underwhelming quarterly results. During its most recent earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna reiterated that AI is a vital long-term growth driver, suggesting that AI adoption will enhance—rather than replace—the demand for IBM’s mainframe services.

In June, IBM and OpenAI collaborated on the cybersecurity-focused OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. This new agreement builds on that relationship by merging OpenAI’s AI models with IBM Autonomous Security, the company’s multi-agent-driven cybersecurity service.
