Uber and Pony.ai Prepare to Roll Out 2,000 Robotaxis Throughout Europe
Pony AI, a Chinese enterprise dedicated to autonomous vehicles, has partnered with Uber to launch 2,000 robotaxis across four European cities, marking a significant step in their enhanced collaboration.
This project highlights the aspirations of both companies to establish a prominent presence in the rapidly expanding robotaxi market. Recently, Uber has allied with over 30 partners within the autonomous vehicle industry, including Pony.ai. Meanwhile, Pony.ai has successfully commenced services in four cities across China and is engaging with local transportation authorities to improve its robotaxi services in Europe and the Middle East, particularly in Qatar.
Although Uber and Pony.ai have yet to announce a specific timeline or the cities for the robotaxi launch, they assure that more information will be forthcoming. This strengthened partnership appears to clarify various aspects, especially concerning Pony.ai’s “joint-deployment model,” which is progressing towards full commercial viability.
In this collaboration, the Guangzhou-based company will supply the autonomous vehicle technology, while Uber will leverage its extensive ride-hailing network. Both companies have noted that some fleet management tasks—such as maintenance, cleaning, and charging—may be outsourced to local service providers, and the ownership structure of the robotaxi fleet could vary by region.
Uber and Pony.ai initially declared their partnership in May 2025, with a primary focus on the Middle Eastern market. Earlier this year, they redirected their efforts towards Europe, aiming to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia, in partnership with the local company Verne.
