Stripe Aims to Acquire AI Gateway Startup OpenRouter for More Than $7 Billion

A recent Bloomberg report indicates that Stripe has finalized its acquisition of OpenRouter.

OpenRouter helps users select various AI models based on their unique needs and financial considerations. In May, the company announced that it had raised $113 million in a Series B funding round, achieving a valuation of roughly $1.3 billion. Key investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G from Alphabet.

During that time, OpenRouter’s CEO Alex Atallah compared the company to Stripe for AI, highlighting its function as a central access hub for various systems, which prevents vendor lock-in. The startup also reported having 8 million users globally and access to more than 400 AI models.

Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Stripe and OpenRouter were in talks for an acquisition. Bloomberg has now confirmed that these discussions have resulted in a deal worth over $7 billion.

A Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company refrains from commenting on rumors or speculative issues.
