Stripe Plans to Acquire AI Gateway Firm OpenRouter for More Than $7 Billion
As reported by Bloomberg, Stripe has successfully finalized its acquisition of OpenRouter.
OpenRouter provides users with the option to select from a diverse range of AI models suited to their unique needs and financial circumstances. In May, the company announced that it had raised $113 million in a Series B funding round, achieving an estimated valuation of around $1.3 billion. Notable investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G, which is part of Alphabet.
During that period, OpenRouter’s CEO Alex Atallah compared the company to Stripe in the AI landscape, highlighting its position as a key platform for accessing multiple systems, thus preventing vendor lock-in. The startup also mentioned that it serves 8 million users globally and offers access to over 400 AI models.
Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Stripe and OpenRouter were in discussions about a potential acquisition. Bloomberg has now confirmed that these negotiations led to a deal surpassing $7 billion.
A Stripe representative informed TechCrunch that the company does not comment on rumors or speculative topics.
