Stripe Plans to Purchase AI Gateway Firm OpenRouter for More than $7 Billion

As reported by Bloomberg, Stripe has successfully completed its acquisition of OpenRouter.

OpenRouter enables its users to select from a diverse range of AI models tailored to meet their individual needs and financial circumstances. In May, the company announced it had raised $113 million in a Series B funding round, achieving a valuation of around $1.3 billion. Prominent investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G, a division of Alphabet.

At that time, OpenRouter’s CEO Alex Atallah compared the company to Stripe in the AI sector, highlighting its importance as a platform for interacting with various systems, thus preventing vendor lock-in. The startup also pointed out that it serves 8 million users globally and offers access to over 400 AI models.

Recently, The Wall Street Journal disclosed that Stripe and OpenRouter were in discussions about a potential acquisition. Bloomberg has now confirmed that these talks have led to a deal valued at more than $7 billion.

A spokesperson for Stripe informed TechCrunch that the company refrains from commenting on rumors or speculative topics.
