Spotify Unveils Playlist Notes for Users and Editors to Share Insights on Song Choices

On Monday, Spotify introduced a new feature called “Playlist Notes,” allowing users to share their thoughts on the playlists they create. This enhancement follows the “User Notes” functionality that was launched last month, which enables users to add personal comments on individual tracks.

With Playlist Notes, users can provide background information for songs, podcast episodes, and audiobooks in their playlists. Whether a track brings back certain memories, reminds you of someone special, or is just a must-hear, this feature provides a space for expression.

To leave a note, just open the mobile app. Select a playlist that you own or are contributing to; tap the three dots next to any track, podcast episode, or audiobook; click on “add note”; and then save. Everyone with access to the playlist will be able to see your note.

Spotify is integrating this idea into its editorial playlists as well. Now, the platform’s editors can include notes to explain their selections for certain songs. Initially, listeners can find this feature on some of Spotify’s most popular playlists, such as Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop, and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop.

In addition, a new editor profile feature is being rolled out. Editor Profiles will highlight an editor’s favorite tracks and albums, along with the playlists they curate, giving listeners a more in-depth understanding of the creators behind Spotify’s recommendations.

User-generated notes are being launched on iOS and Android devices across more than 100 markets. Editor notes and profiles will be accessible to both free and premium users aged 16 and older in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

While it may appear to be a minor feature, it aligns with Spotify’s broader vision of fostering a more social and personalized app experience, enabling users to share the narratives and thoughts behind their favorite music.

Furthermore, this gives Spotify a competitive advantage over rivals like Apple Music and YouTube Music. Recently, the company announced its Q2 earnings, celebrating the achievement of surpassing 300 million subscribers for the first time and reaching 777 million monthly active users.
