Stripe Acquires OpenRouter, an AI Gateway Firm, in a Deal Exceeding $7 Billion
As reported by Bloomberg, Stripe has successfully finalized the acquisition of OpenRouter.
OpenRouter offers users a selection of AI models tailored to meet their unique needs and financial circumstances. Back in May, the company disclosed that it had secured $113 million in a Series B funding round, resulting in a valuation close to $1.3 billion. Notable investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G, a subsidiary of Alphabet.
In announcing the funding, CEO Alex Atallah compared OpenRouter to Stripe within the AI ecosystem, highlighting its function as a platform that links various systems and reduces vendor dependency. The startup caters to a global user base of 8 million and provides access to over 400 AI models.
Recently, The Wall Street Journal revealed that Stripe and OpenRouter were in talks regarding a possible acquisition. Bloomberg has now confirmed that those discussions culminated in a deal exceeding $7 billion.
A representative from Stripe communicated to TechCrunch that the company does not comment on speculation or rumors.
