Stripe Acquires OpenRouter, an AI Gateway Firm, in a Transaction Exceeding $7 Billion
Bloomberg has reported that Stripe has finalized its acquisition of OpenRouter.
OpenRouter offers users a diverse array of AI models tailored to meet their specific needs and financial circumstances. In May, the company revealed that it had secured $113 million in a Series B funding round, elevating its valuation to approximately $1.3 billion. Prominent investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G, a subsidiary of Alphabet.
In the funding announcement, CEO Alex Atallah compared OpenRouter to Stripe within the AI sector, highlighting its function as a platform that integrates various systems and reduces vendor dependency. The startup caters to a global audience of 8 million and provides access to more than 400 AI models.
Recently, The Wall Street Journal disclosed that Stripe and OpenRouter were exploring a potential acquisition. Bloomberg has now confirmed that these discussions culminated in a deal valued at over $7 billion.
A representative from Stripe informed TechCrunch that the company does not address speculation or rumors.
