Stripe Aims to Acquire AI Gateway Firm OpenRouter in a Deal Valued at Over $7 Billion
As reported by Bloomberg, Stripe has successfully completed its acquisition of OpenRouter.
OpenRouter offers users the ability to select from a diverse range of AI models tailored to meet their specific requirements and financial circumstances. In May, the company announced it had secured $113 million in a Series B funding round, achieving a valuation of around $1.3 billion. Key investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G, a division of Alphabet.
In that announcement, OpenRouter’s CEO Alex Atallah compared the company to Stripe in the AI sector, highlighting its function as a platform for interacting with various systems and helping to prevent vendor lock-in. The startup also reported that it serves 8 million users globally and provides access to more than 400 AI models.
Recently, The Wall Street Journal disclosed that Stripe and OpenRouter were engaged in talks for a potential acquisition. Bloomberg has verified that these negotiations culminated in a deal valued at over $7 billion.
A representative from Stripe informed TechCrunch that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.
