Stripe Set to Acquire AI Gateway Firm OpenRouter in a Deal Surpassing $7 Billion
Bloomberg reports that Stripe has successfully completed its acquisition of OpenRouter.
OpenRouter provides users with the opportunity to select from a range of AI models tailored to their specific needs and financial circumstances. In May, the company revealed it had secured $113 million in a Series B funding round, achieving a valuation of around $1.3 billion. Notable investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G, an Alphabet subsidiary.
During that announcement, CEO Alex Atallah compared OpenRouter to Stripe within the AI sector, highlighting its function as a platform for connecting with various systems and helping to prevent vendor lock-in. The startup claims to have 8 million users globally and offers access to over 400 AI models.
Recently, The Wall Street Journal disclosed that Stripe and OpenRouter were in talks regarding a potential acquisition. Bloomberg has confirmed that these conversations culminated in a agreement valued at more than $7 billion.
A representative from Stripe told TechCrunch that the company does not comment on speculation or rumors.
