Who’s Behind the Innovative ‘Stealth Model’ Ox Alpha?

The launch of a new AI model called Ox Alpha has ignited a storm of speculation online about its developers.

Released for free on OpenRouter on Thursday, this model is described as “a reasoning model intended for coding, continuous agentic tasks, and production workloads.” Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe, whose company is in the process of acquiring OpenRouter, called Ox Alpha “very impressive” on X.

So, who exactly created Ox Alpha? According to its listing on OpenRouter, it is described as a “stealth model,” crafted and maintained by an unnamed third-party provider during this preview stage.

Not surprisingly, much of the speculation has focused on China. AI analyst Andrew Curran mentioned on Friday that initial discussions pointed to the GLM models produced by the Chinese firm Z.ai, but “this morning, people appear to be less certain about anything.”

Similarly, an article on Wccftech initially suggested that the available hints pointed towards GLM, but a later update hinted that Ox Alpha might actually be an unreleased iteration of Microsoft’s MAI. In the meantime, a discussion on Reddit claims that Ox Alpha “can’t be Chinese,” while another comment expresses “high confidence” that it is indeed of Chinese origin.
