Uber Launches Live Video Streaming Feature for Teen Riders

On Tuesday, Uber revealed a new feature for live video streaming aimed at helping parents monitor their children’s safety during rides. This functionality will be available nationwide in the upcoming weeks.

The innovative streaming feature leverages the driver’s selfie camera to deliver a live video feed. When the ride commences, the parent or guardian associated with the teen’s account will receive a notification indicating that the video stream is ready. Should they choose to view the stream, both the driver and the teen will be notified.

Uber specifies that only parent or guardian accounts associated with the teen’s profile will have permission to access the live video stream. Friends traveling with the teen will not have the option to remain unseen in the video feed.

After the ride concludes, video access will be revoked for all parties involved, including the driver, the teen, and their parent or guardian. While Uber states that the video is “encrypted,” it remains unclear whether this refers to end-to-end encryption, which would prevent Uber from viewing the footage. When reached for comment by TechCrunch, an Uber representative did not provide further details.

Currently, this feature is available in nine cities, such as Atlanta, Cleveland, and Rhode Island, with plans for broader implementation across the U.S. shortly.

Uber introduced teen accounts in the U.S. in 2023 and has since expanded this feature to over 50 countries.
