a16z announces $1.1B ‘Machine Age’ fund to drive AI’s physical development

Andreessen Horowitz has launched a new “Machine Age” fund, successfully securing $1.1 billion. The firm intends to “accelerate the physical development of AI” with this investment.

This fund will focus on hardware investments, shifting away from the firm’s typical focus on the scaling capabilities of software. According to a post on the venture capital firm’s website, a16z will aim to invest in the essential infrastructure required for AI, including components such as computer chips, memory, data centers, and robotics.

“We need faster, more efficient systems. There is a demand for cost-effective and high-bandwidth memory across the memory hierarchy. Accelerated and scalable interconnects between nodes and systems are critical. Furthermore, power-efficient edge devices are required for AI to interact with and interpret its environment. Additionally, all developments in cooling, materials, electrical systems, and real estate to support these technologies are vital,” states the post.

AI is referred to as the “most powerful tool ever developed for solving challenges and creating abundance,” according to the firm, which views its advancement as a “social and national imperative.”
