AI Memory Challenge Looms for Android Applications

Google is revising its Android application requirements as developers navigate significant memory chip shortages driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers. This week, the tech company announced two new quality standards for apps: one focused on reducing memory consumption and improving code efficiency.

According to the company, the mobile industry is facing “notable hardware supply constraints that are influencing device memory availability,” which can affect the overall user experience on their devices.

In light of this issue, Google is establishing new performance benchmarks for areas such as dynamic memory utilization and bitmap management. Additionally, new guidance for code optimization is being introduced to address problems like app slowdowns and crashes linked to performance issues.

To assist developers, Google intends to launch new tools that will notify them when their apps exceed the updated limits, enabling necessary code adjustments. More diagnostic tools are anticipated to be released later this year, including a Memory Limiter feature that provides comprehensive insights to prevent excessive memory utilization by applications.

These improvements aim to help Android app and game developers enhance user experiences, especially in scenarios where memory resources are constrained, particularly for budget-friendly devices where cost considerations are paramount.

Developers will have until February 2027 to align with the new standards, as outlined on Google’s Android Developer website.

Furthermore, by April 2027, the company will require all Play Store applications to comply with the Zero Tap Sign-In standard during device transitions. This requirement states that apps with user sign-ins, whether mandatory or optional, must automatically restore the user’s sign-in status when switching between Android devices that utilize the Android Restore Credentials API.
