How Sweden Built One of Europe’s Most Vibrant Startup Ecosystems
Sweden has emerged as a leading tech hub on the global stage. With its legacy of giants like Spotify and Klarna, the recent influx of innovative startups—from the legal AI company Legora to the vibe-coding tool Lovable—has piqued interest in the dynamics of this nation, often regarded as one of the happiest places on earth.
Sophia Bendz, a general partner at Cherry Ventures, joined Equity to explore the current trends in Stockholm’s startup landscape. She attributes the rise in prominent startups to a cultural shift that views entrepreneurship as a desirable pursuit. In her earlier days at Spotify, the conventional routes were banking or consulting. “Today, many individuals appear to prioritize the pursuit of freedom and the potential for wealth along with innovation.”
According to Dealroom, this year, the startup ecosystem has secured $2.8 billion in funding, with projections to reach a minimum of $5 billion. Last year’s total funding was $3.2 billion. While it has yet to surpass the $8.5 billion raised in 2021—a sign of the hot venture market that later cooled and is now, as per recent data, beginning to rebound—promising companies like Neko Health and autonomous freight firm Einride have emerged from this landscape.
Bendz observed that the latest wave of startups in Stockholm is gaining from the experience and advice of the initial generation of entrepreneurs, who are mentoring newcomers or even launching new ventures themselves; for example, Spotify’s Daniel Ek is now a co-founder of Neko Health.
“We’re also witnessing many individuals from Lovable venturing out to explore new opportunities for building companies with cutting-edge technology,” she noted, emphasizing the potential for this current generation to inspire those that follow. “It seems that individuals associated with Lovable and Legora are particularly entrepreneurial, eager to embark on their own projects.”
It is no surprise that American investors have taken note. Bendz pointed out that an increasing number of American investors are traveling to meet founders and present term sheets. “This simply demonstrates that we have a wealth of exceptional companies being built here,” she remarked. “It shows we’re genuinely on the right track.”
