British Heavyweight Champion Riakporhe Highlights Fitness Concerns for Moses Itauma After ‘Alarming’ Loss to Filip Hrgovic
Richard Riakporhe, the reigning British heavyweight champion, voiced his concerns regarding Moses Itauma’s fitness during Saturday night’s bout.
The 36-year-old knockout artist was present at the O2 Arena, attentively watching the IBF world title fight against Filip Hrgovic from Itauma’s corner.
The 21-year-old from Kent showcased impressive skills in the first seven rounds, delivering a barrage of combinations to the 34-year-old Croatian challenger.
However, he appeared to lose steam after the seventh round, requiring a stretcher to exit after a punishing ninth-round onslaught.

Riakporhe, who measures 6ft 5in and has fought previously at the cruiserweight limit of 14st 4lb, commented, “He seemed to be running low on energy even from the third round.”
“This sport requires top-notch strength and conditioning coaches; each team member must fulfill a specific role.”

“Heavyweight boxing is unique; it feels like a completely different sport.”
“When I made the transition, I completely revamped my team, including my coaches and conditioning experts.”
“Preparing for a full 12 rounds is essential. It was alarming to see him in the corner—his mouth was wide open by the fourth round.”
Following his surprising defeat, a video emerged on talkSPORT where Itauma admitted he likely hadn’t completed a full 12-round spar during his training for the experienced Olympic bronze medalist.

Riakporhe pointed out that while Itauma’s tactics appeared effective at first, they diminished as the fight progressed.
He noted, “It’s surprising he didn’t spar the full 12 rounds.”
“Training camps should incorporate that kind of preparation; if not, you won’t understand how you perform under duress.”
“I select sparring partners who challenge me. My body may hurt, but I embrace that discomfort as it readies me for tough moments.”
“You cannot afford to exhaust your energy reserves.”
Like many within the UK boxing community, Riakporhe has shown his support for the young fighter and looks forward to his strong comeback.
He asserted, “There are numerous exciting fights ahead for him, and boxing fans have certainly taken notice of Moses Itauma after this match.”
“This sport is about entertainment, and he undeniably put on a show.”
