The Pentagon Unveils Its Own ChatGPT and Grok Alternative

The Pentagon has rolled out versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok, granting 3 million civilian and military personnel access to generative AI tools tailored for “warfighter needs.”

ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government — customized iterations of the popular consumer generative AI tools — are now part of GenAI.mil, a centralized and secure platform that launched last year.

GenAI.mil, which initially featured Google Gemini at its inception, is designed to provide Department of Defense staff with access to advanced commercial AI models while ensuring sensitive government information is not shared through conventional consumer channels. Importantly, the official military version is not subject to the data collection practices that often accompany consumer technology products.

As reported by the Department of Defense, the generative AI portal has seen considerable success. GenAI.mil has more than 1.7 million unique users onboarded from the department’s 3 million personnel.

These new developments are part of the Pentagon’s broader strategy to utilize AI tools for improved efficiency and to provide the Department of Defense with a strategic edge while maintaining security. They also highlight the exclusion of Anthropic’s Claude model and the Pentagon’s intention to engage with other companies after disagreements with the frontier lab. The Trump administration had identified Anthropic as a supply-chain risk — a designation the company is currently challenging in court — following its refusal to offer the Pentagon unrestricted access to its AI tools while calling for certain safety protocols.

ChatGPT Mil, which is derived from OpenAI’s government program, aims to provide an experience akin to that of regular ChatGPT users. The tool will focus on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, according to the Defense Department. It will also assist with document-intensive, routine unclassified tasks including administrative duties, logistics, planning, and policy. Additional features are expected to roll out over time.

In contrast, the Pentagon described Grok’s capabilities and potential uses in broader and more military-oriented terms.

“Starshield AI’s Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate boosts in productivity, improved knowledge retention, and more secure and efficient collaboration,” stated the Defense Department in a press release. (SpaceX’s Starshield AI is a secure satellite network utilizing the company’s existing Starlink technology.)

The department further noted that Grok would empower the military “to complete missions more rapidly and with greater accuracy in various operational scenarios, such as market research for acquisition specialists and supply chain management for logisticians.”

The Pentagon has also established partnerships with several technology companies to bolster its AI capabilities, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
