If Space-Based Data Centers Are Not Viable, Could Interstellar Travel Be the Next Frontier?
The Starcloud team, an innovative startup focused on building a network of GPUs in space, has unveiled an exciting investment opportunity: the launch of a small spacecraft embarking on an extraordinary 80,000-year mission to Alpha Centauri.
If successful, this mission would become the first human-made object specifically engineered to travel to another star, joining the ranks of the sixth entity to break free from our solar system.
This project, known as Fermi Explorer, is led by a non-profit organization that is actively seeking partners, funding, and expertise. The founding team includes Starcloud co-founders Philip Johnston, Adi Oltean, and Ezra Feilden, alongside project manager Garret Jameson, who have formulated a plan to leverage existing space technology to send a 1-kilogram spacecraft with a payload area of 10 cm² into interstellar space.
The founders emphasize that this mission stem from humanity’s intrinsic desire to explore, aiming for a remarkable achievement while addressing the Fermi paradox—the inquiry into why we have not yet encountered intelligent extraterrestrial life, which inspired the project’s name.
The estimated budget for this pioneering mission is around $15 million, with a proposed launch date set for 2029. The non-profit is actively looking for contractors to design and build the spacecraft, as well as financial partners and a range of scientific and artistic payloads—similar to those carried by NASA’s Voyager spacecraft, the first human-made object to exit our solar system.
Many prior efforts in interstellar exploration have stumbled due to the immense distances and the limited speed of our current travel technologies. For perspective, Voyager, launched in 1977, is now roughly 26 billion kilometers from Earth, while Alpha Centauri, our closest stellar neighbor, lies an astounding 41 trillion kilometers away.
A previous initiative in Silicon Valley attempted to address these hurdles by founding a non-profit called Breakthrough Starshot in 2016, backed by Yuri Milner and Mark Zuckerberg. This program aimed to spearhead a multi-billion-dollar effort utilizing an advanced laser propulsion system to reach Alpha Centauri within two to three decades. Unfortunately, it lost momentum before 2025, despite ongoing enthusiasm for space exploration.
In contrast, Fermi Explorer proposes a different approach: instead of pushing technological boundaries, it plans to utilize existing resources to achieve something.
“I was filled with hope but then faced disappointment!” Johnston reminisced about the Starshot initiative. “That’s why we are committed to this endeavor. We aim to launch something within three years. … The fundamental difference between most other [interstellar] projects and Fermi Explorer is that they seek to fulfill their ambitions within a human lifespan, necessitating billion-dollar propulsion R&D investments. We have intentionally established an 80,000-year timeline as our minimum viable mission.”
The project entails launching the spacecraft via a rocket rideshare, followed by efficient, low-power electric propulsion to navigate various orbits, ultimately guiding it toward Alpha Centauri. The spacecraft is expected to function for approximately 12 years before entering a long coast phase to the nearby star system.
“If a dinosaur bone can endure for 200 million years, then a metal container should certainly withstand the radiation expected for 50,000 years,” claimed Johnston. “We do not plan to reactivate the spacecraft after 80,000 years. Our hope is that a future civilization will uncover it.”
