If Space-Based Data Centers Face Difficulties, Will Interstellar Travel Be Our Next Horizon?
The Starcloud team, an innovative startup focused on creating a GPU network in space, has unveiled an exciting investment opportunity: the development of a mini spacecraft intended for an unprecedented 80,000-year mission to Alpha Centauri.
Should this venture succeed, it will represent the first human-made object deliberately designed for interstellar travel, and it will become the sixth object to escape our solar system.
Dubbed Fermi Explorer, this project is led by a non-profit organization actively looking for partners, funding, and expertise. The founding team includes Starcloud co-founders Philip Johnston, Adi Oltean, and Ezra Feilden, along with project manager Garret Jameson, who have devised a strategy to utilize current space technologies to launch a 1-kilogram spacecraft with a payload area of 10 cm² into interstellar space.
The founders advocate that this mission symbolizes humanity’s inherent curiosity for exploration, striving for a remarkable milestone while simultaneously tackling the Fermi paradox—a question about the absence of contact with intelligent extraterrestrial beings, after which the project is named.
The projected cost for this ambitious initiative is approximately $15 million, with a target launch date set for 2029. The non-profit is actively seeking contractors for spacecraft design and construction, as well as financial partners and various scientific and artistic payloads, akin to those taken by NASA’s Voyager spacecraft, which was the first human-made object to leave our solar system.
Numerous previous attempts at interstellar travel have encountered obstacles due to immense distances and the slow velocities of current space travel technologies. For reference, Voyager, launched in 1977, is currently about 26 billion kilometers from Earth, while Alpha Centauri, our closest stellar neighbor, is a staggering 41 trillion kilometers away.
A previous initiative in Silicon Valley sought to tackle these issues by establishing a non-profit named Breakthrough Starshot in 2016, with support from Yuri Milner and Mark Zuckerberg. This program aimed to launch a multi-billion-dollar project utilizing an advanced laser propulsion system to reach Alpha Centauri within two to three decades. Regrettably, it lost momentum before 2025, despite ongoing interest in space exploration.
In contrast, Fermi Explorer introduces a fresh approach: rather than pushing technological boundaries, it seeks to optimize existing resources to achieve something.
“I was filled with hope but then faced disappointment!” Johnston reflected on the Starshot initiative. “This is why we are dedicated to this project. Our aim is to launch something in the next three years. The key difference between most other [interstellar] endeavors and Fermi Explorer is that they aim to achieve their objectives within a human lifespan, necessitating multi-billion-dollar propulsion R&D investments. We have purposefully established an 80,000-year timeline as our minimum viable mission.”
The mission will entail launching the spacecraft through a rocket rideshare, followed by efficient, low-power electric propulsion to navigate various orbits, ultimately directing it toward Alpha Centauri. The spacecraft is anticipated to operate for about 12 years before embarking on a lengthy coast phase towards the neighboring star system.
“If a dinosaur bone can endure for 200 million years, then a metal container should withstand the anticipated radiation for 50,000 years,” Johnston noted. “We do not plan to reactivate the spacecraft after 80,000 years. Our hope is that it will be discovered by a future civilization.”
