Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho appointed as new Head of the Special Investigating Unit

Pretoria – Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho has been named the new head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Lekgetho pursuant to section 3(1)(a) of the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act of 1996 (SIU Act), with the appointment taking effect today, Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

Lekgetho succeeds Advocate Andy Mothibi, who left his role as Head of the SIU on 1 February 2026 to take on the position of National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Following this, Lekgetho was designated to act as the Head of the SIU.

He has now been officially appointed as the permanent Head to ensure the stability of the Unit and its ongoing contribution to combating crime.

The Special Investigating Unit is an autonomous statutory entity established under the SIU Act.

The SIU’s primary mandate involves investigating serious allegations of corruption, malpractice, and maladministration within State institutions, State assets, and public funds, as well as any activities that may significantly jeopardize public interests, and recovering financial losses incurred by State institutions through civil litigation.

The SIU is authorized to take civil action to rectify any wrongdoing uncovered during its investigations.

Lekgetho brings 19 years of experience from 2007 to the present in the SIU, where he has held various roles, including his current position as Chief Operations Officer.

Additionally, he served as an investigator in the former Directorate of Special Operations.

The new Head of the SIU possesses degrees in law, education, and science, along with a diploma in forensic auditing and a post-graduate diploma in cyber law.
