Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho Assumes Leadership of the Special Investigating Unit

Pretoria – Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho has officially been appointed as the new leader of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

This decision was made by President Cyril Ramaphosa as per section 3(1)(a) of the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act of 1996 (SIU Act), with his official term commencing today, Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

Lekgetho takes over from Advocate Andy Mothibi, who resigned from his role as Head of the SIU on 1 February 2026 to assume the position of National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Since Mothibi’s exit, Lekgetho has been performing the duties of the Head of the SIU in an acting capacity.

His confirmation as the permanent Head now ensures the continued stability and essential operations of the Unit in its mission to combat crime.

The Special Investigating Unit functions as an independent statutory authority established under the SIU Act.

The primary objective of the SIU is to investigate serious allegations of corruption, misconduct, and maladministration within governmental institutions, state assets, and public finances, while addressing any activities detrimental to public interests, and striving to recover financial losses faced by state entities through legal channels.

The SIU is empowered to initiate civil litigation to rectify any misconduct revealed during its inquiries.

With 19 years of experience at the SIU, Lekgetho has occupied various positions since 2007, most recently serving as the Chief Operations Officer.

Prior to that, he worked as an investigator for the former Directorate of Special Operations.

The newly appointed Head of the SIU possesses qualifications in law, education, and science, as well as a diploma in forensic auditing and a postgraduate diploma in cyber law.

“President Ramaphosa wishes Mr. Lekgetho all the best, along with the leadership and staff of the SIU, as he takes on the critical role of leading an agency vital to the criminal justice system’s efforts against crime and corruption,” remarked Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson for the President.
