Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho Assumes Leadership of the Special Investigating Unit

Pretoria – Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho has been named the new leader of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

President Cyril Ramaphosa made this appointment in line with section 3(1)(a) of the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act of 1996 (SIU Act), and his term commenced today, Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

Lekgetho takes over from Advocate Andy Mothibi, who resigned from his role as Head of the SIU on 1 February 2026 to take on the position of National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Following this, Lekgetho was designated to act as the Head of the SIU.

He has now been officially confirmed as the permanent Head, ensuring the continued stability and essential work of the Unit in combating crime.

The Special Investigating Unit is an independent statutory entity created under the SIU Act.

The primary objective of the SIU is to investigate serious allegations of corruption, misconduct, and maladministration in governmental bodies, state assets, and public finances, as well as any actions that may adversely affect public interests, and to recover financial losses sustained by state institutions through civil litigation.

The SIU possesses the authority to initiate civil actions to rectify any misconduct discovered during its investigations.

Lekgetho brings 19 years of experience with the SIU, having held various positions since 2007, including his current role as Chief Operations Officer.

He has also served as an investigator in the former Directorate of Special Operations.

The new Head of the SIU holds degrees in law, education, and science, alongside a diploma in forensic auditing and a postgraduate diploma in cyber law.
