VLC Hits Over 7 Billion Downloads

Amidst a sea of expensive streaming options, the entirely free and offline VLC media player, developed by the non-profit organization VideoLAN, has now reached over 7 billion downloads across different platforms.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president and chief developer of VLC, announced this milestone through an email. This achievement occurs nearly 18 months after the app achieved the 6 billion download mark in January 2025.

Kempf mentioned that the organization has recently optimized VLC for Amazon’s latest Vega OS for televisions. Additionally, they are focused on broadening support for other platforms and codecs while gearing up for the forthcoming VLC 4 release, although progress has been slower than anticipated.

Last year, VideoLAN suggested the possibility of AI-powered translation and subtitles using local models, but it is still unclear if these features have been integrated.
