Microsoft 365 Outage Continues, but Positive Developments Surface

Microsoft is presently on the second day of managing a prolonged outage that has affected customer access to Outlook email and various Microsoft 365 services.

On Monday, notable strides were made toward resolving the issue, which originated from a complication with its Exchange Online service. This resulted in email delays, failures, authentication problems, and other challenges for numerous Outlook users.

However, as of Tuesday, the problem has not been entirely resolved. Microsoft’s latest update on X indicates that while mitigation efforts are still progressing, this does not necessarily mean that everything is back to normal.

While Outlook has received the majority of the attention, Microsoft’s status page for Microsoft 365 (Business and Enterprise) reveals that additional services were also impacted, including SharePoint, Copilot, Teams, Purview, Defender XDR, the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, and Universal Print.

These complications were linked to an issue with a “core authentication configuration utilized by multiple Microsoft 365 services.”

In the early hours, Microsoft communicated via X the measures they were taking to resolve an issue identified during their investigation, which was determined to be a misconfiguration affecting their service. This misconfiguration prevented authentication components from “deploying as intended to a portion of infrastructure.”

Initially, Microsoft examined recent changes that might have triggered this issue and began testing and implementing various mitigations to improve the situation for end users. Over time, as these mitigations were executed, Microsoft indicated that Outlook users should observe a “gradual recovery” in their mail flow. By 10 p.m. ET on Monday, the company reported enhanced mail flow, although the search functionality continued to face challenges.

Shortly after 3 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Microsoft noted progress in search functionality.

While many users may be experiencing improvements at this time, Microsoft has not yet confirmed that all services are fully restored.

Their latest update on X stated that “indications from telemetry remain positive” and service availability is trending upwards. Microsoft is now entering a phase of extended monitoring to ensure a thorough resolution.
